Account-based marketing: agency or in-house? Costs, 2026
What an account-based marketing agency costs against an in-house hire in year one, the hybrid split, and when each is the right call. Sourced and dated.
$210,000 to $280,000
Contents
A common answer is both. Salesmotion recommends keeping account selection, ICP refinement, signal monitoring, sales enablement and program strategy in-house, and outsourcing creative production and specialized paid media buying. At the bottom of the published ranges, year one costs about $280,000 with an agency and $210,000 with one senior hire, and the hire takes six to nine months to get going.
Year one, at the bottom of each range
Agency, structured program $280,000
Fees $180,000, setup $10,000, license $30,000, media $60,000
One senior hire $210,000
Salary $120,000, license $30,000, media $60,000
Two senior hires $330,000
Salaries $240,000, license $30,000, media $60,000
Year one, US dollars
- Who does the work
- Setup, once
- License and media, the same either way
Agency. A structured one-to-few program starts at $15,000 a month, so $180,000 in fees. Add setup at the low end of $10,000 to $30,000, a platform license at $30,000 and media at $5,000 a month, the bottoms of Salesmotion's ranges. Year one: $280,000.
One senior hire. Salesmotion puts a senior account-based marketing manager at $120,000 to $180,000 or more, fully loaded. At the bottom, with the same license and media, year one is $210,000. The license and media belong to the program, not to whoever runs it.
Two hires. A second person makes in-house the dearer option, at $330,000. New Perspective puts one senior in-house marketer nearer $210,000 fully loaded, from the median marketing manager salary of $161,030.
Media management is commonly billed at 10 to 20 percent of spend (New Perspective), so an agency's revenue grows when your spend grows, whether or not your pipeline does.
How long until anything ships
Agency, learning curve 2 to 3 months
In-house, learning curve 12+ months
A senior hire, recruited and ramped 6 to 9 months
3 to 6 months to recruit, then another quarter to ramp
A full team, built in-house 6 to 12 months
Months from the decision
- At least
- Up to
- And longer
The cash gap in year one is smaller than either side claims, and on speed the agency wins. Salesmotion says an agency can compress the learning curve from 12 months or more to two or three, while a senior hire takes 3 to 6 months to recruit and another quarter to ramp. Anyone who says in-house is obviously cheaper has not priced those months.
The hybrid split
Salesmotion's split, which we think is the right starting point:
- Keep in-house: account selection, ICP refinement, signal monitoring, sales enablement and program strategy.
- Outsource: creative production (custom landing pages, video, direct mail), specialized paid media buying, and event marketing.
- Share: reporting and attribution, content strategy and campaign optimization.
The dividing line is who learns from the work. A company that owns its account list, and its reasons for each name, keeps the part that compounds: the exclusion tests, the ICP as it behaves, and why named accounts said no. An agency is well placed to write and send, and poorly placed to leave that judgment behind.
When to hire an agency, and when it is too early
Hire when:
- You lack the expertise. Renting the playbook beats learning on your own named accounts.
- You need to scale quickly. Salesmotion says building that team internally takes 6 to 12 months.
- You run complex one-to-one programs that need creative work you could not justify as permanent headcount.
It is too early when:
- You cannot name the accounts. If the list is a filter in a database, an agency will build one from the same filter and charge setup for it. Build it first.
- Nobody inside owns the outcome. A retainer with no internal owner produces a monthly report nobody acts on.
- You need pipeline this quarter. Salesmotion says agencies promising pipeline within 30 days are likely running broad demand generation, and puts initial pipeline at 3 to 6 months.
Where Draftship fits
Our program is the outsourced half of that split: the research on each account, the emails and the sending, while the list and the reasons for each name stay with you. It is $1,000 a month, month to month, with no setup fee, plus the tools you pay for directly, which is well under the agency figures above. How it runs is on the account-based marketing page, and what other agencies publish is drawn beside our price on the pricing page.
