How to use Draftship with ChatGPT (consumer)
ChatGPT in the browser is the simplest path for non-developers to draft email copy. Here's a copy-paste workflow that produces emails ready for Draftship blocks without prompt engineering background.
ChatGPT is the friction-free path for marketers without an engineering team. Open chatgpt.com, paste a prompt, copy the response, paste into Draftship. The whole loop takes under five minutes for a single email and the output is good enough to ship after a light edit.
The five-minute workflow
A prompt that consistently ships
Save this as a Custom Instruction or paste at the start of every chat:
txtYou're helping me write marketing emails for {{ my company name }}, which is {{ short description }}. Voice rules: - Direct, no fluff. - Short sentences over long. - Avoid: synergy, leverage (as verb), unlock, journey, exciting. - Examples of past emails I've sent (paste 2-3 real ones below): [example 1] [example 2] When I ask for an email, output: - Subject (under 50 chars) - Preheader (under 90 chars) - Heading (one short line) - Body (2-4 paragraphs) - CTA button label and URL placeholder Don't add commentary. Just give me the email.
The Custom Instructions feature in ChatGPT (under Settings) saves this across all chats so you don't paste it every time.
Iterating on output
The first draft is rarely the right one. The fast iterations:
- "Tighten paragraph 2; cut by half."
- "Rewrite the subject. Less promotional."
- "Make the CTA button label more specific."
- "Try a more conversational tone in paragraph 1."
ChatGPT keeps context within the conversation, so each refinement compounds.
Pasting into Draftship
The most common pattern: copy each section from ChatGPT, create the matching Draftship block, paste. Specifically:
1. Copy the subject. Paste into Draftship's email settings (subject field). 2. Copy the preheader. Paste into the preheader field. 3. For the heading, create a Heading block in Draftship, paste the text. 4. For each body paragraph, create a Text block, paste. 5. For the CTA, create a Button block, set the label, and paste the URL.
Draftship's block-based structure mirrors ChatGPT's segmented output, so this maps cleanly.
Image generation via ChatGPT (DALL-E in chat)
ChatGPT Plus includes image generation. Prompt for hero images:
txtGenerate a hero image for an email about {{ topic }}. Aspect ratio 16:9. Style: editorial, clean, no text in the image.
Right-click the resulting image, save to your computer, upload to your CDN or your ESP's image library, paste the URL into a Draftship Image block.
Test send checklist
- Run the final email through the spam word checker and the size checker.
- Send a test through your ESP.
- Open in Gmail and Outlook.
- Replace any placeholder URLs ChatGPT generated with real ones.
When ChatGPT isn't enough
For batch generation across hundreds of recipients, the consumer ChatGPT is too slow. Move to the OpenAI API. For brand-voice precision at scale, consider Claude with proper prompt engineering. ChatGPT shines for one-off drafts where speed beats systematization.
