ATELIER
SIX MONDAYS, FROM 6 OCTOBER
Colour, slowly.
Watercolour, six evenings, and a parcel in the post before any of it starts.
Hello friend. You are enrolled, and nothing is required of you until the sixth of October except one small thing at the bottom of this email. Here is the whole course, so you can see where it goes.
Week one · 6 Oct
Mixing greys
Two pigments and white. Most of what you will use for the rest of the course is decided here.
Week two · 13 Oct
Wet into wet
Where control ends. Expect to throw away most of what you make, cheerfully.
Week three · 20 Oct
Edges
Hard, soft, and the ones you leave alone. The shortest session and the one people ask about afterwards.
Week four · 27 Oct
One jug, six times
The same object on six mornings in six different lights. Bring a jug you like looking at.
Week five · 3 Nov
Working larger
The half sheet. A different arm, a different problem, and a lot more water.
Week six · 10 Nov
Finishing
What to keep, what to crop, and how to tell when a thing is done rather than abandoned.
What arrives
A roll of 300gsm cotton paper, already cut to size. Six tubes: two blues, two earths, a yellow and a white. Two brushes, neither of them the cheap ones.
The parcel goes out on 26 September, so the address we have needs to be right before then. That is the one thing.
Every Monday session is recorded and stays up for a year, so a missed week is a week watched later rather than a week lost.
